赵建刚吃青蛙的一个笑话是我亲眼所见，还是那年夏天的一个夜半，我听见他从地里回来后，在他宿舍和几个人进进出出地忙活着，我知道他们又是在收拾青蛙。但过了一会儿，却听见他们几人纷纷跑出房子，在院子里不住地呸、呸、呸地吐东西，接着又是大笑声、漱口声，不知他们在搞什么，便开门出去，问他们怎么了，他们只顾漱口、刷牙、大笑，不说啥事。第二天我才知道，赵建刚在炒青蛙时，发现没有盐了，不知谁想起二班宿舍的窗台上有，便去抓了一把用了。青蛙炒好后，几个人一尝便大叫起来，什么怪味呀!这才明白那窗台上的东西不是盐，而是尿素(化肥)，这件事后来成了战友们取笑赵建刚的话柄。不过，在那精神和物质都匮乏的年代，赵建刚经常能随时发现身边为我所食的东西，并能舍出工夫把它变成美味，不得不承认这是热爱生活、乐观面对困境的一种积极活法，也是他的性格所致。
离开南泥湾后，多次吃过田鸡肉，油炸的、爆炒的、黄焖的，每次都会想到赵建刚和青蛙的故事。青蛙是益虫，按现在的说法，捕捉青蛙就是破坏生态平衡，但那时人们还没意识到。稻田里成群成堆的青蛙是怎么捉也捉不完的，之所以没去大量捕捉它，是因为当时还没人把青蛙叫田鸡，田鸡肉还没被大家接受，否则灶房就应该去捉一些青蛙来改善伙食，当然，只有赵建刚当司务长才行。
五年前的那个春节，大家都没有过好，之前在赵建刚检查出患了不治之症后，大家就难以相信，一个热心、活跃、勤快、随和、热爱生活的人，快要不久于人世了吗?也许他自己有感觉，去世前三个月，他拖着不适的身体、跟随团宣传队回到了阔别三十多年的南泥湾，从录像中还可以看到他和战友们在团部广场高唱“军垦战歌”，还可以看到他搀扶着腿受伤的战友上山坡。
大年三十那天，听到他因支持不住又一次入院的消息，晚上我们全家二十多口人正吃年夜饭时，外甥因接到单位电话需马上赶去，我放下只叨了一口菜的筷子，坐他的车赶往医院。远远地、医院门口、昏暗而又清冷的路灯下，站着赵建刚的妻子韩文渢，她在迎接我，她的身影显得那么焦虑、孤单、无助。外面鞭炮炸响，病房却很安静，使我能听得清他微弱的话语，他向我讲述不久前回南泥湾的情景，讲述他知道有一种牧草，可以在南泥湾种植，发展养牧业，讲述着他病好以后还要再回一次南泥湾的计划。这时又有一位战友孙咏民赶来，我们一起陪着他迎来了新年的钟声，我们庆幸赵建刚算是过了这个年。
大年初一，当我们又赶往医院时，大夫让赶快准备后事，我们四位战友一起去为赵建刚选了寿衣。初二晚上，大夫说多来几个人等着吧，今晚过不去，赵建刚已无父母，兄弟姐姐全在外地，只有我们几个战友在走廊上陪着他，大夫很感动，问道，他没有年轻的亲戚吗?你们岁数大了，受的了吗?大夫不知道我们是兵团战士，啥罪都受过，熬个夜算什么。
昏迷又清醒，清醒又昏迷，赵建刚终于醒不来了，送往太平间后，几位男战友在太平间外点上香烟、对天高呼：赵建刚!安息!一路走好!
送葬那天，我给赵建刚写了悼词，念悼词的贺养田战友情感丰富，把那几句结束语念的很凄哀：“......热爱生活、热爱大自然、热爱南泥湾的好战友赵建刚走了，愿你的灵魂离开这喧嚣的闹市，一直向北、向北，去到那流淌着你青春的故土安息吧!那里有纯洁的天空、浑厚的沃土、清新的空气、悦耳的蛙鸣......”。
赵建刚不会想到，在他的悼词里会提到青蛙。
